ART HISTORY REMIX
ILLUSTRATION / COLLAGE
Famous paintings, redrawn in lines, planes and flat colour.
A Rubens hunt and a Fouquet Virgin, taken apart into geometry. Every figure keeps its place in the picture — but turns into wedges, stripes, dots and flat colour.

The Hippopotamus and Crocodile Hunt, remixed. Digital illustration.
Peter Paul Rubens, The Hippopotamus and Crocodile Hunt, 1615–16. Oil on canvas. Alte Pinakothek, Munich.

02 / The hunt
Rubens set the hunt on the banks of the Nile — hence the palm tree in the background. Hippos and crocodiles were considered revered and dangerous creatures, so killing them was a privilege of the nobility.
Three men in orientalising costume ride Arabian horses with spear and sword; two servants fight on foot, and one is killed by the beasts. An enraged hippopotamus tramples a crocodile, and both are attacked by hunters and hounds.
The hippopotamus: drawing and painting, detail.
Painting and drawing, detail by detail. Video.
In the remix the scene keeps its diagonal. Riders, spears and the hippo’s open jaw become wedges, hatching and dots against a flat blue sky.

03 / There’s clearly Rubens involved
Rubens, remixed. Digital illustration.
Peter Paul Rubens, Self-portrait, 1623. Oil on panel. Royal Collection.
There’s clearly Peter Paul Rubens involved. So the painter gets the same treatment as his picture: the hat and the cloak become two black circles.

04 / The Virgin
Virgin and Child, remixed. Digital illustration.
The same method on a very different painting. Fouquet’s Virgin sits among red and blue angels, pale as porcelain.
In the remix the crown, the ermine cloak and the child are rebuilt from circles and triangles; the angels turn into red rings and wedges.
Jean Fouquet, Virgin and Child Surrounded by Angels (right wing of the Melun Diptych), c. 1452–55. Oil on panel. Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp.
Painting and remix, side by side. Video.

05 / Out in the world
The hunt as a mural. Mock-up.
Fresh milk, 0.33. Packaging mock-up.
Three posters, framed. Mock-up.
Out of the museum: on a façade, on a wall of posters, on a carton of fresh milk.
Technique: Digital illustration, animation
